With the new year nearly upon us, it can be challenging to know just how to ring it in right, especially when it comes to your outfit of choice. Maybe you’re preparing for a fancy year-end bash that calls for a chic cocktail dress, or you’re having a smaller celebration with friends and need a touch of polish. Even if you plan on spending a quiet evening at home with a box of Mallomars, you can get plenty of style inspiration from our friends at Playclothes in Hollywood, California.

Playclothes is a vintage shop in the heart of movie-making heaven, with a collection of attire and housewares that allows even the least dramatically inclined to taste the fun of a costumed life. Their collection of stylish goods moves from the 1930s all the way to the flash and sparkle of the 1980s. Playclothes’ real focus, though, is on iconic midcentury American fashion. With suits, dresses, trousers, and blouses, as well as those necessary details like hats, bags, shoes, and jewelry, the boutique has the necessary items for either recreating an era completely or more subtly adding a bit of vintage flare to a contemporary ensemble. They even have children’s clothes, so the whole family can get in on the fun.
The staff has so successfully curated Playclothes’ collection that the shop has helped clothe the cast of a number of films and television shows. It’s no surprise that they have outfitted the cast of Mad Men—a show that set the benchmark in reviving period fashion. They’ve also contributed to the wardrobe styling of films like Dreamgirls, The Aviator, Seabiscuit, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and even lent some creative assistance to Indiana Jones.
If you can’t make a trip to Hollywood before New Year’s Eve, then at least take a virtual tour. There’s plenty to inspire festive evening attire for whatever your particular celebration of choice might be. What better way to start 2015, than with a classic look?
