In the July/August issue, we venture to Los Angeles to see the magic behind popular design blog Oh Joy! From the style to the studio, we caught Joy in action to see how her popular work comes to life. Here’s a sneak peek!
Visiting someone’s workspace can reveal a lot about a creative spirit, which is certainly the case with the Oh Joy Studio, where color and order neatly fit together. White walls, exposed brick, and high ceilings create an open-yet-muted interior, allowing inspirational splashes of color to spring from the furniture, framed wall art, and even the kitchen appliances (which includes a vintage-styled SMEG fridge in aqua). The same can be said of Joy’s designs, which are characterized by a use of vibrant color that grabs the eye but remains contained within crisp and intentional lines and patterns.
Brightly colored paper lanterns float above a table adorned with gingham-patterned paper plates, pink and orange plastic goblets, and dessert cups accented with multicolored stripes—such is the kaleidoscopic world of Joy. Her characteristic balance of bold colors and clean lines comes alive with her new summer collection for Target.
Using orange, yellow, pink, and aqua, some items draw the entire palette together, like the plaid-patterned paper plates and cups. Others, like the disposable goblets, take on one color at a time, accenting each with a gold band. Drawn together, the pieces create the feeling of a happy picnic on a warm summer’s day.
In Los Angeles, we took the collection’s “Garden Party” title to heart and worked with Joy to set up a summer soirée that focused on different decorating possibilities that would complement her work. The July/August issue features simple DIY centerpieces, like handpainted gourds turned into vases, which add neutral and natural accents to Joy’s colorful designs. Joy told freshstyle that she draws particular inspiration from nature. The items produced by her creative talents offer a perfect pairing to a summer spent enjoying the outdoors.
